Colorado’s Democratic governor, Jared Polis, has signed a bill that protects the rights of working professionals in the state related to marijuana use.
Sen. Kevin Van Winkle (R) wrote a bill (Prohibit Professional Discipline Action For Marijuana) passed by the legislature last month. It says that regulators can’t deny or revoke professional certifications, registrations, or licenses based solely on civil or criminal violations related to activities that are now legal in the state, like using cannabis.
If a person’s license or certification was previously taken away because of a marijuana-related offense in the past, it could not be used against them moving forward.
The legislation also prevents regulators from denying licensing due to past disciplinary action related to cannabis anywhere in the US.
California legislated a similar bill in September last year.
